This home is located on the corner of Church and Queen St. It is an early Gothic style house with gingerbreading on the eves. It was made of a rare pink brick, possibly created in Newmarket. The house was built in 1850 by Mark Scanlon, a lawyer, and one of the original town fathers. He was born on the farm of his father, Mark, on the north half of lot 16, on the ninth concession, West Gwillimbury. He graduated with a B.A from Victoria College, Cobourg, which is now affiliated with Toronto University. He is the father of Mr. A.E. Scanlon, who was also a lawyer in Bradford. Professor Day also lived here as did the Misses Lane. It is now the home of Robert Evans, a lawyer.
This folder contains photographs of various historic buildings in Bradford and accompanying descriptions on each. The photographs are found in the Bill & Erica Marks Archive Room and were originally compiled by George Jackson and Joe Saint. The text accompanying each photograph was researched and written in 2015-2017 by Janice Hopkins, a long-time library volunteer. She utilized many library resources in her research which are noted at the bottom of each description. See below for information on each reference.
"Construction crews working on Holland Street West uncovered a bit of history last week. According to several workers at the road reconstruction site, several large timber-like beams were unearthed from about six feet below the present surface of the road. It is likely that the beams date from the 1800s, and were either part of, or laid just after the demolition of, the first covered road in the county...."
This was probably on Church St. Note the wooden plank sidewalk. Elizabeth Hodgson was born in December 1898 and died in December 1969. Elizabeth Hodgson later married Ross Bell, and they had five children: Marguerite (married Gerald Roberts), Jean (married Frank Kell), Gladys (married John Cronan), Tom (married to Lois), and Doris (married to Lew Campbell).
"The first major steps to preserve the heritage of the Scotch Settlement and area were taken last week when about 20 people officially founded a historical society. Known as the Scotch Settlement and District Historical Society, it will seek to preserve the historical record of not only the struggles of the Scottish settlers but those of Bradford and West Gwillimbury as well. Phillip Baker, a representative of the Ministry of Culture and Recreation was on hand to describe the procedure in setting up a historical society, the grant structure, and the initial problems that will have to be faced..."
