They came to pay tribute to Arthur Evans in Barrie last week at an appreciation night sponsored by the Simcoe Centre Progressive Conservatives. Mr. Evans is holding one of the many gifts he received that night, a caricature of himself in cavalier costume while Mr. Evans' wife Audrey, and Simcoe Centre MPP George Taylor look on. This photo appeared in the Bradford Witness along with an article about the evening and both of these were found in the Bradford Women's Institute Scrapbooks.
"Former warden of Simcoe County, D. Arthur Evans. MPP for Centre Simcoe, won the riding for the Progressive Conservative party five times during his 16 years as a member of the Ontario Legislature. Mr. Evans has announced he will be retiring at the end of his current term. George Taylor, Barrie lawyer, has been chosen the next party candidate to stand in the next provincial election. Simcoe County warden in 1958, Warden elected to the legislature on September 20, 1960, when the late Leslie M. Frost was Ontario premier. Mr. Evans ran in a by-election when the seat became vacant through the death of the late George G. Johnston."

Thompson Smith was a Toronto man who participated in the incorporation the Rama Lumber Transport Co. and who opened up a lumber mill in Amsterdam (near Bradford). The exact date of opening is unknown, but it was sometime between 1858-1869. The mill was a steam mill and many of the logs cut were shipped along the Holland River. Smith's mill was eventually one of many in the area during the late nineteenth century.
