In the early days of white settlement in the Innisfil area, Lake Simcoe provide the easiest access - by boat in the summer and by foot or sled in the winter. Inclement weather in either season and the annual freeze-up and ice break up simply meant no travel. John Graves Simcoe, commissioned the building of Yonge St. to Holland Landing in 1790, and in 1793 initiated the Military Establishments at Penetanguishene. This gave a land route to Lake Simcoe and another land route was needed on to Penetanguishene. Early records use the name "Main Street", but is soon became known as the Penetang Road, the name of its northern counterpart. In the early days of Penetang Road - later Hwy #11 and now County Road #4 or Yonge St. - travel was slow and difficult. Many hotels were established to provide lodging, stabling and food for travellers plus acting as a meeting place for local men.

GOEDHART, Nicholaas (Nick) - Suddenly at his home at Sandy Cove Acres, Stroud on Monday, December 19, 1994, Nick Goedhart formerly of Bradford in his 75th year. Husband of Adri Verheul. Dear father of Ruly and her husband Cliff Barnes, Willy and her husband Michael Kiloran both of Bradford. Dear Opa to Stephanie, Barry and the Late Andrew Barnes, Jared and Devin Kiloran. Friends called at the Lathangue & Skwarchuk Funeral Home, 30 Simcoe Street, Bradford. Service was held in the chapel on Thursday, December 22, 1994, at 11 a.m. followed by cremation.

COCHRANE (Gibbons) Isabelle peacefully at her home Stroudo [sic] on Sunday, May 17, 1987. Isabelle, beloved wife of Joseph Cochrane and the late Leo Gibbons. Loving mother of Kay and her husband Don Wise, Madeleine and her husband Scotty Kell, JoAnne and her husband David Sander, dear step mother of Helen and her husdand [sic] Barry Rowbotham, Donald and his wife Margaret, Beverly and his wife Evelyn. Dear grandmother of 23 grandchildren. Funeral service was held from the McKelvey Funeral Home, Barrie on Wednesday. Interment St. Paul's Anglican Cemetery, Innisville [sic].

The community was saddened to hear of the death of one of the pioneers of this area and send condolences to her family in the area. Pearl Rebecca Chappel passed away peacefully at Eureka Chalet Retirement, Barrie on Saturday, Jan. 26 Pearl Rebecca Hardy in her 90th year, beloved wife of the lat Harry Chappel. Dear mother of William Chappel and his wife Ethel; Elizabeth (Mrs. Calvin Gibbons) both of Barrie and Shirley (Mrs. Allen Prophett) of Scarborough. Loving grandmother of 11 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren. Complete funeral service at Innisfil Community Church was held Tuesday, Jan. 29 at 1pm. Internment [sic] in the spring at 6th Line Cemetery, Innisfil. She was a true pioneer being born in Lefroy and marrie Harry Chappel Oct. 20, 1920 by Rev. Chapley of Stroud at Lefroy. She also had four sisters and one brother born in Lefroy. They were Sarah (Mrs . MarshallAtkinson), Susan (Mrs. Wm. Ruffett), Jack Hardy who was married to Gertrude Everton of Gilford; Georgina (Mrs. Bob Gibbons), Phoebe (Mrs. Frank Chappel). She was the last of that family....
