Fred Cook

"Deputy Reeve Fred Cook has decided to run for council in this year's election. 'I've served for 10 or 12 years as deputy reeve. I think it's time to let someone else have a shot at it, but I'd still like to serve on council,' said Mr. Cook. Born and raised in Bradford, the town has been the centre of the candidate's whole life. 'I have a natural interest in the developments affecting the future of the town. It's pretty certain we are going to grow unless growth is restricted by the government. I'm not against growth, but I think it's essential we don't grow too fast or too soon. As we grow, we must set up and maintain the essentials for growth, from our schools to our sewers,' said Cook. Cook said his greatest interest, outside his work and politics, has been Christian education. In 1962, he received a national citation for Christian education by a Canadian from the department of Christian Education from the Canadian Council of Churches. He has also served as a lay reader in the Anglican Church since 1934."

Davis announces Evans' appointment to MTC post

"Last week, Ontario Premier William Davis appointed Simcoe Centre MPP Art Evans, parliamentary assistant to the minister of transportation and communications, Jim Snow. Mr. Evans said Friday that he was pleased with the appointment and was looking forward to his new duties. In the past Evans has been involved in the energy field and was on the Board of Directors of Ontario Hydro for a number of years."

Art Evans is returned for PCs

"A different type of campaign relying on door-to-door canvassing paid off for D. Arthur Evans last Thursday when he was returned to the Ontario Legislature. Mr. Evans, the Conservative incumbent, led New Democratic candidate Paul Wessenger by 1,934 votes and Liberal Marg Kelly by 4,443. Mr. Evans said he felt the race was closer this time both because he was running against two good candidates and a provincial trend which saw the Conservative majority cut and their number of seats reduced to 51."

Hughes retires from roads

"West Gwillimbury Road Superintendent, Grenville Hughes, 68, resigned last week, after 14 years of service with the council staff. Reeve Orville Hughes accepted the resignation, thanked the road superintendent on behalf of the council for all his co-operation in the past and wished him a long and happy retirement. Councillor Bud Brown and Art Janse suggested council show appreciation of Mr. Hughes services over the years in some tangible way. This was agreed to by Reeve Hughes and Councillor Bob Sturgeon. Councillor Brown asked Mr. Hughes, whose resignation becomes effective on April 6, if he would be prepared to stay on for a short time until a replacement could be found, should this prove to be necessary. Clerk Don Wood told council that two or three applications for the job had already been received."

He was speaking at an all-candidates meeting held in Sir William Osler School by the Bradford and West Gwillimbury Progressive Conservative Riding Association. Three contestants for the nomination in Simcoe-centre spoke after Mr. Evans reminisced about his last 16 years at Queen's Park. Evans described his various duties, told a joke about Stuart Smith, and promised the nominees that the winner would have all his support and advice."
