This photo is taken from west of Hwy. 400 after Hurricane Hazel (Oct. 15, 1954). Debris is shown piled up along Hwy. 400, which is on the far side of the hydro poles. The top of a long pile of bagged onions can be seen in the foreground. Note: onions were not used as sandbags.

Two articles relating to the memories of those who lived through the Holland marsh flooding due to Hurricane Hazel. The first is a continuation of Edo Knibbe's recollection, and the second is by Addy Ellens.

"Feeding refugees:
Marsh refugees enjoy a hot meal in the Bradford town hall after their flight from the flooded Holland Marsh. Most spent the winter in an emergency trailer camp set up where the community centre stands today."

"Protecting the Holland Marsh from another Hurricane Hazel will cost at least $1.6-million, according to figures released by the South Lake Simcoe Conservation Authority...."
The Marsh fears its dykes will not hold off another flood if a big storm hits, 25 years after Hurricane Hazel.
