Description : A lifelong resident of West Gwillimbury and Bradford, with the exception of the past several months which were spent in a Toronto nursing home, Mrs. Richard Thorpe passed away last Thursday, March 6. A fall at her home in Bradford about seventeen months ago, when she broke her leg, left her an invalid and recently she had suffered several slight strokes. Born on
Concession 11, West Gwillimbury, in March 1865, Annie Kellaway Kneeshaw resided in the township until moving to Bradford over twenty years ago. In 1886, she married Richard Mark Thorpe, also of West Gwillimbury. During her earlier life she attended Ebenezer church, but later, when Mr. and Mrs. Thorpe moved to Concession 9, to the now Sawdon farm, they attended the Mount Pleasant church until it closed, and then they came to Bradford Methodist, later United. Over twenty years ago Mr. and Mrs. Thorpe retired from farming and took up residence in Bradford, where they endeared themselves to neighbours and townspeople by their kindly friendliness. They loved flowers and gardening and their lawn and flower beds were always beautifully tended.Mr. Thorpe died in August 1948, and while Mrs. Thorpe kept her home her following his death, she spent the first winter in Toronto, then returned to reside for over a year before her accident. A devout churchwoman, Mrs. Thorpe was active in her church until failing health prevented. In the W.M.S. she was a life member, an honour conferred upon her by the Society. Surviving are two sons, Emerson of Woodville, and Roy of Toronto; two sisters, Miss Elizabeth Kneeshaw of Toronto and Mrs. Robt. Sawyer (Rhoda) of Carnduff, Sask.; five grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. The funeral was held from the United Church on Saturday afternoon, with services conducted by her minister, Rev. F.G. MacTavish. Interment in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. The pallbearers were three grandsons, Elmer Thorpe and Kenneth Thorpe of Toronto, and Orin Thorpe of Woodville; two grandsons-in-law, Robert Riddell of King and Lorne Clement of Toronto; and a grand-nephew and neighbour, Gordon Bateman of Bradford.

Description : Bradford's oldest resident, Mrs. Sarah Caroline Cook, died recently. She would have been 95 next month. Born Sarah Mills in West Gwillimbury in 1874, she married John Gibson Cook who operated a piano and music business in Bradford in partnership with John Gilheeney. She lived on Moore Street. Mrs. Cook leaves a sister, Reita; two sons, deputy-reeve Fred Cook and Jack F. Cook of Windsor; a daughter, Mrs. Tom Gardner; two grandsons, Don Gardner, a teacher at Simcoe District High School, and Jack Gardner, a lawyer in Toronto; and four great-grandchildren. The funeral service was held at the Lewis Funeral Chapel, conducted by Rev. W. H. Warnica. Pallbearers were Jack Gardner, Don Gardner, Gordon Bateman, Robert Brown, Ruston Folliott and Edward Gapp.

Description : Died at Toronto General Hospital. Had not been well for some time, but was hospitalized only six days before his death. Eldest son of the late Robinson and Polly Whiteside. Brother of Thomas and Franklin of Bradford. The brothers all lived together on the farm, located west of Bradford. Attended Middleton Public School and Bradford High School before becoming a farmer. Member of Bradford United Church. Funeral held from home, Rev. F.G. MacTavish officiating. Interment in Mount Pleasant Cemetery. Pallbearers: Walter Palmer, Harry Williams, Alonzo Williams, Robert Wood, Lorenza Harvey, and George Young.

Rested at the Lathangue-Kilkenny Funeral Home, Simcoe St., Bradford. Funeral Saturday at 8:30 a.m. to Holy Martyrs' Church for requiem high mass at 9 a.m. Interment Roman Catholic Cemetery, Bradford.

Description : The last member of one of the Scotch Settlement's most highly esteemed pioneer families, Miss Catherine (Kate) Faris, passed away at Bayview Convalescent Home, Langstaff, on January 9, 1958, in her 86th year. Because of advanced age, Miss Faris had been resident in the convalescent home for some time, but her health was remarkably good and she was up and about the home until a few days before her death, which resulted from a stroke. Miss Faris was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Faris of Maple Farm, that lovely Scotch Settlement farm owned later by her brother, the late William G. Faris, and now by her nephew, Murray Faris. She was born on that farm, attended No. 4 school and Bradford High School, and returned to the farm after school days to assist her mother. Later she retired to Bradford with her mother. A very kindly lady, interested in people, and especially young people, Miss Faris went to Toronto and became Y.W.C.A. secretary at Dundas House. She fulfilled her duties there most capably and was made superintendent at the Y.W.C.A. Pembroke House, a position she filled with ability and understanding for fifteen years. For about twenty years she lived retired in Toronto.Miss Faris was predeceased by four brothers, John, Peter, William G. and Edwin, and one sister, Mrs. John Sinclair (Jane). A sister-in-law, Mrs. W. G. Faris of Queensville, and nephews and nieces survive her. The funeral was held from the Lathangue-Kilkenny Funeral Home, Bradford, on Saturday, January 11, with interment in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bradford. The services were in charge of Rev. Brailey, formerly of Glebe Road United Church, Toronto. The pallbearers were Jack Gibson, E. M. Faris, Robert Sinclair, Ken Wood, John Faris and Murray Faris.

Description : A West Gwillimbury Township son, and a brother of the Township's Reeve, Dr. Ernest R. Selby passed away at his home in Calgary on Friday last, June 17. Dr. Selby had not been well during the past several months, due to a heart condition, and the message informing his family here of his death was not entirely unexpected. Born on the Selby farm, lot 12,
Concession 9, West Gwillimbury, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Wm. Selby, Dr. Selby attended Bowles' school and Bradford High School before taking his medical course at Toronto University. After his graduation he specialized at Gravenhurst Sanitorium, St. Louis, and at the Mount Royal Hospital in Montreal, before going to Calgary where he established a practice. He was in Calgary about two years when early in the First Great War, 1914-1918, he offered his services to his country. At that time western Canada units were not being recruited and Dr. Selby came east and signed as a medical officer. During his term of military service he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant-Colonel and also won several medals for distinctive service. The was over he returned to Calgary and about two years later he married Laura McQueen of that city, who survives him, with their two sons, Dr. Raymond Selby and Bill Selby, both of Calgary. Also surviving are two brothers, Percy and Cyril Selby, both of Bradford; and three sisters, Mrs. Roy Kneeshaw (Mary) of Bradford, Miss Lena Selby, R.N., of Asbury Park, N.J., and Mrs. George Thomas (Stella) of Orange, N.J. Dr. Selby was a member of the Anglican church. He was a Mason, having joined Simcoe Masonic Lodge, No. 79, Bradford, before going to western Canada. He took much interest in the St. John's Ambulance Corps and had an outstanding record in instructing for this Corps. The funeral was from his home in Calgary with interment in that city.

A beloved mother and most respected friend and neighbour, Mrs. William Selby, passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Roy Kneeshaw, on Monday, June 5, following a long illness. Mrs. Selby whose maiden name was Hannah Ney, was born in 1853 and had lived all her life in this community. She was a quiet, gentle, home-loving woman, her interest, outside of her home, being centred about St. Paul's church, Coulson's Hill, where she was a most faithful and active member. Her husband, William Selby, of U E. Loyalist stock, died eleven years ago on the farm on the 9th of West Gwillimbury where he was born and where he and the late Mrs. Selby came to reside with her daughter, Mrs. Roy Kneeshaw, where she made her home for the past nine years. The bereaved members of the family have the sympathy of the community in their grief. Those left to mourn her loss are three sons, Percy and Cyril on the home farm, and Dr. E.R. Selby of Calgary, Alta., three daughters, Mrs. Roy Kneeshaw of Bradford, Mrs. E.G. Thomas of South Orange, N.J., and Miss Lena of Orange, N.J., one sister, Mrs. John Robinson of Aurora, also Mr. John Wright of Onaway, Mich. She was predeceased by two brothers and three sisters. The pioneer families of West Gwillimbury as well as those of more recent residents were represented in the very large funeral cortege which proceeded from the home of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Kneeshaw to St. Paul's cemetery, Coulson's Hill, on Wednesday afternoon, June 7th.
