Description : One of the district's most elderly, well known, and highly respected residents, Mr. John Henry Lee, passed away on Friday, February 12. About a year ago his health began to fail. He spent six weeks in Southampton hospital where expert medical opinion was sought. In September he returned to Bradford where, at the home of his son, Mr. Seward Lee, he was cared for through a long illness by his granddaughter, Miss Charlotte Lee, while his family and his old friends came and went. The week before his death he was removed to Newmarket hospital where he passed away in his sleep early Friday morning. Born almost 93 years ago on Lot 3, Concession 11, West Gwillimbury, a son of Samuel Lee, who was also born on the same farm, and of Alice Burns of Mount Pleasant corner, who was of Scotch descent from Nova Scotia, John Lee was the third generation of Lee on that farm, his Irish grandfather having come from County Derry to settle there. In 1887 he married the late Charlotte Hodgson and they took up residence on the 12th concession of West Gwillimbury. With their family of nine they resided there until 1916 when they moved to the farm north of Bradford where their son, Seward Lee, now resides. In 1928, when their son married, Mr. and Mrs. Lee moved to Bradford. In 1937 Mr. and Mrs. Lee celebrated their golden wedding anniversary with a complete family circle. Three years later, in 1940, after Mrs. Lee's death, he returned to make his home on the farm where he was a favourite with old and young alike, remaining mentally keen to the last. For 74 years the late Mr. Lee was a member of L.O.L. No. 209, Newton Robinson, and during that long period of years he never missed an Orangemen's walk. He was also a member of the Black Preceptory. He had been at times District Master and County Master of the Orange Lodge. Several decades ago he was associated with the public life of the township and county. He and his family were also a vital part of the little Anglican Church at Pinkerton for many years. Orangeman Conservative and Anglican to these three convictions he remained staunch. Mr. Lee is survived by one son Seward of Bradford; eight daughters Mrs. Thos. Brown (Flossie) of Bradford; Mrs. R. Watt (Minnie) of Raymore Sask.; Mrs. J. Fraser (Luella) of Port Elgin Ont.; Mrs. E. Fennell (Isabelle) of Bradford; Mrs. J. Hamilton (Christine) of Ormond Florida; Mrs. P. Haller (Mina) of Ann Arbor Mich.; Mrs. Morrow (Clara) of Murillo Ont.; Mrs. K. Jack (Henrietta) of Clarkson Ont.; 28 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren; and one brother Christopher Lee of Bradford. A brother Sam and sisters Misses Jennie and Agnes predeceased him during recent years. All members of his family were here for his funeral with the exception of Mrs. Watt who visited her father last fall. The funeral service was taken by his rector Rev. W. Johnson on Monday afternoon and interment was in St. Paul's Cemetery. The pallbearers were members of L.O.L. No 209 namely John Robinson, Robt. Webber, John Parks, Ben Steers, and D. K. Harvey.

Description : Although in failing health in recent years, Mrs. Westlake was about as usual last Thursday and early on Thursday evening made a call on a neighbour. Shortly after she returned to her room, in the home of Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Saxon, a sound from the room attracted Mr. Saxon's attention. He called Mrs. Saxon from the garden but Mrs. Westlake passed away within a few minutes. Born near Islington, Mrs. Westlake's maiden name was Annie May Morrison. She grew up there and married Henry J. Westlake, also of that district. The older members of their family were born there. About forty-seven years ago they purchased the farm in the Scotch Settlement, now the home of their son, Robert, and for over thirty years resided there. Sixteen years ago Mr. Westlake died and when their son married, Mrs.Westlake moved to Bradford, occupying rooms in several houses here during the years. Over a year ago she was seriously ill and for a time was at Inniswood Lodge, near Barrie, but returned to her home with Mr. and Mrs. Saxon about a year ago. During her years in the Settlement she was a member of the Scotch Settlement Presbyterian Church and of its W.M.S. and since coming to Bradford her church as been the United Church, where she was a regular attender and among whose church people she made many friends. Mrs. Westlake is survived by three sons and three daughters, namely, Mrs. Frank Hurd (Ethel) of Orangeville; Ernest of Toronto; Mrs. Walter Edney (Lillian) of Bradford; Roy of Brampton; Robert of the Scotch Settlement; and Mrs. Clarence Kneeshaw (Ruth) of Bradford. The funeral was held on Sunday from the Lathangue-Kilkenny Funeral Home, with interment in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bradford. Rev. F. G. MacTavish of the United Church conducted the service. The pallbearers were three of her neighbours when she lived in the Scotch Settlement, namely, Whitfield Jessop, now of Alliston, Herbert West, and Robert Sinclair, now of Churchill; a grandson, Murray Gould of Niagara Falls; a nephew, Garnet Westlake of Beeton; and Mr. Ray Saxon of Bradford.

Description : Frank Albert Saint, Bradford's oldest citizen and former well known resident of the Scotch Settlement, passed away in York County Hospital, Newmarket, on Monday, November 1, 1954, in his 94th year. He suffered a broken shoulder as the result of a fall in his home in Bradford about ten days previously and was unable to rally from the shock. Born in England, the late Mr. Saint came to this country about 1870 with his parents who established a home in a farm in the Scotch Settlement, near Bradford. In 1887 he married Annie Campbell of Bradford and continued farming in the Settlement. Of quiet disposition, he was a lover of horses and became widely known as a breeder of fine Clydesdale horses, in recognition of which he was made a life member of the Ontario Clydesdale Club in 1946. After his wife's death in 1926 he remained on the farm until about eight years ago when he moved to Bradford to reside with his daughter. He is survived by one son, Dr. Fred F. of Calgary, Alta., and two daughters, Lena M. of Bradford and Mrs. J. W. Bateman (Wilma) of Toronto. Another son, Arthur J., predeceased him about two years ago.The funeral, which was largely attended, was held last Thursday afternoon from the Lathangue-Kilkenny Funeral Home, Bradford, with Rev. C. E. Jackson of Bradford Presbyterian Church officiating. Interment was in Scotch Settlement Cemetery.The pallbearers were Wm. Melbourne, K. Melbourne, H. Coutts, B. Stewart, K. Saint and M. Jones.

Description : A resident of Bradford for nearly forty years, Secondo Cavallo passed away in York County Hospital, Newmarket, on Wednesday, November 10, 1954, in his 75th year. In February of this year he suffered a slight stroke but since was able to be out and around. However, the Sunday before his death he became ill and was taken to the hospital the following day.
Born in Montemangio, Monferatta, Italy, December 22, 1879, he came to Canada in 1906. In 1912 he married Josephine Laudadio at Calgary, Alta., where they lived for about three years. They moved in 1915 to Bradford where he opened a shoe repair shop which he operated until his retirement from business following his illness last February. For many years he was known throughout the district as an ardent lawn bowler and curler. His wife predeceased him May 27, 1952. He is survived by one son, Bruno, of Sudbury; a daughter, Mrs. Thoms (Aida), Bradford; a grandson, Raymond, Bradford; one brother, John, Toronto, and a sister, Mrs. John Maurino (Mary), Bradford. A brother, Luigi, predeceased him. The funeral was held from the Lathangue-Kilkenny Funeral Home, Bradford, on Friday, November 12, to Holy Martyrs R.C. Church for requiem mass. Interment was in the Roman Catholic Cemetery, Bradford.The pallbearers were Leo Maurino, Ernie James, John Dudgeon, James Pickles, Leo McEvoy and Raymond Thoms.

Description : The death occurred at York County Hospital, Newmarket, on Tuesday, January 4, of Mrs. Lawrence Church of Bradford. Mrs. Church had been in poor health for several years, during the early years of which she had been cared for at her home here by members of her family. In more recent months she had been with her daughter, Mrs. O. Gould in Newmarket, from whose home she was moved to the hospital a few weeks before her death. Mrs. Church was the former Mabel May Saint and was born in Bradford and had spent her entire life here where she was well liked and held in high esteem by all who knew her. On April 26, 1911, she married Lawrence Church of Bradford, who survives her, with their family of three sons and three daughters, namely, James and Gordon of Bradford, John of Schomberg, Mrs. O. Gould (Marion) of Newmarket, Mrs. R. Curtis (Eileen) of Kirkland Lake, and Mrs. W. Covert (May) of Barrie; and fourteen grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Mrs. W. Reeves (Sadie), and Mrs. Jas. Armstrong (Jane), and one brother, Leonard Saint, all of Bradford. Mrs. Church was a devoted mother, wife and sister, and will be sadly missed in her home and among members of her family, among whom she was held in sincere affection. She will also be missed by townspeople, especially in the women's groups, where she had long been a faithful worker in the W.A. of Trinity Anglican Church and Bradford Women's Institute.She was a member of Trinity Anglican Church.The funeral was held from the Lathangue-Kilkenny Funeral Home on Thursday afternoon. Services were conducted by her rector, Rev. W. S. Johnson and interment was in Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bradford. Six nephews were the pallbearers, namely, Norman and Roy Church and Larry Saldeld, all of Pontiac, Mich., and Ken, Mel and Roy Saint of Bradford.

Description : The death occurred at Dunnville on Thursday, January 20, of Mrs. E. P. Snow in her 89th year. Mrs. Snow will be remembered by old time residents of Bradford. Her husband was in business here known as a sadler business, and Mr. and Mrs. Snow resided in the house on John
Street now occupied by Mr. and Mrs. T. R. Saxon. After Mr. Snow's death, some thirty years ago, Mrs. Snow moved to her home town of Dunnville and had since resided there.Throughout the years Mrs. Snow never lost interest in Bradford and her friends here. She kept herself informed of people here through this newspaper. Mrs. Snow was a very active worker in Trinity Anglican Church during her residence in Bradford. Mr. Snow had for many years been a valued member of that church's choir. Trinity church's choir gowns and mortar board hats were presented to the choir by Mrs. Snow in memory of her husband.
