Several bystanders dived into the river in a vain attempt to rescue Bales. James Watson and Norman Burrows recovered the body.Sergeant Vincent Cairo of the East Gwillimbury Township police administered artificial respiration, and a resuscitator was used by Dr. William Linton of Toronto for about 30 minutes.
