Description : Padre Hopkins was born in Perth, Ontario, on August 18, 1925. Educated at Perth Collegiate and Bishops University, he was ordained a deacon in Christ Church Cathedral in 1949, and priested in 1950. In 1953, Padre Hopkins enlisted into the Royal Canadian Army Chaplain Corps, and was posted to Korea in August, 1954. On his return to Canada, he served at Camp Utopia, New Brunswick, where he continued his ministry to the Artillery Regiment. Among his many postings, Padre Hopkins served with the first Canadian Contingent as part of the United Nations Emergency Force in Egypt in 1956-57, as Chaplain to Sunnybrook Veterans' Hospital in Toronto on his return to Canada, and later at the Royal Canadian School of Military Engineering in Chilliwak, B.C., and the Royal Canadian School of Signals at Vimy Barracks, Kingston. In 1963, he was promoted to Major, and posted as senior Chaplain to Camp Borden; 1967 - Training Command Headquarters in Winnipeg, as assistant Command Chaplain, then promoted to Lieut. Colonel in 1970 to become Command Chaplain; 1972 - Command Chaplain at headquarters, Canadian Forces Europe, in West Germany; 1976 - promoted to Colonel and Director of Chaplaincy Administration at National Defense Headquarters, Ottawa; 1981 - promoted to Brigadier-General, appointed Chaplain General, and invested as an officer in the Order of Military Merit by Governor General Schreyer. Padre Hopkins retired from the Armed Forces on August 31st, 1984, and was appointed rector of the Anglican Parish of Bradford. He has also been Chaplain for Branch 521, Royal Canadian Legion, for the past 8 years. Medal entitlement includes Merit of Canada, Korea Medal, United Nations Korea Medal, United Nations Operation Medal, and Canadian Decoration and Bar.
