Description : Simcoe-Centre MPP D. Arthur Evans confirmed an earlier announcement that the Minister of Education, Thomas Wells, has agreed to allow the Simcoe County Roman Catholic Separate School Board to sell old St. Mary's Separate School to Bradford council for $1. Mr. Evans said that a letter received by the separate board on September 17, was simply a preliminary letter to inform the board that a directive allowing the sale on its way. When the board received the letter they did not interpret it as a preliminary approval of the sale. Instead, they suggested that it was only to inform them that a change would be made in the Education Act that might allow the sale. Evans explained that he had asked ministry officials if he could make the announcement that the sale had been approved and was told he could. Bradford council originally initiated the offer to buy the school for $1. Council hopes to have the school renovated for a day care and senior citizens' centre. The new ministry directive is not only expected to approve the sale of St. Mary's but to allow school boards across the province to sell school property to municipalities without losing any grants they would receive based on the value of the property.
