Trinity Auction: Baa baa bidding

"Item 58 may have been bidding on himself. One of the more interesting items up for grabs at the Trinity Anglican Church auction, a pet lamb, made more noise than a table full of bidders on Friday night.
The yearly auction, held to raise money for the planned addition to the church, featured 155 items ranging from peanut butter cookies to a hot-air balloon ride. A smart bidder could have walked away from the evening never having to mow a lawn or make dinner ever again.
Local auctioneer Allen Homer kept the crowd's attention with his unique mix of humor and quick-paced auctionese. Homer donates his time each year to help the church raise funds.
Plans for the addition include an elevator, a handicapped washroom and parking spaces, outdoor ramps and a parson's study."

Trinity Auction fever

"Every year, Bradford's Trinity Anglican Church holds the largest charity auction in Bradford West Gwillimbury.
Items up for bids range from the sublime - a diamond ring, donated by Universal Gems; a hot air balloon ride donated by Hugh Adams - to the downright silly. Last year, under the direction of auctioneer Allen Homer, bidding was fierce for the right to shave off the beards of two hirsute volunteers.
This year, the event will be raising funds to install a handicapped access ramp and an elevator at the church.
The auction takes place Friday, May 13th, 7:30 p.m. at the Bradford Arena. There is no admission charge. Refreshments can be purchased."

Gwillim Group's Dinner Theatre - tonight

"One of the groups celebrating Bradford's 150th Anniversary is the Gwillim Group - a group of history buffs, under the aegis of the Bradford West Gwillimbury Local History Association, that is turning the spotlight on Upper Canada's First Lady.
Elizabeth Posthuma Gwillim was not only the wife of Lieutenant Governor John Graves Simcoe, she was an ardent traveller, a hostess equally at home in the wilderness and high society, and an accomplished artist. The Gwillim Group has commissioned a bronze and rock sculpture, by artist Brenda Wainman Goulet, which will be placed in the parkette beside the Post Office on Barrie St.
The Gwillim Group is holding a fundraising Dinner Theatre event tonight, June 9, in partnership with the Bradford District High School Drama Club. The students will present a homorous production of "Happy Birthday Bradford, or Who want a carrot for a mascot?" - while the Group serve up a Spaghetti Dinner, with Strawberry Shortcake for dessert, and there will be a silent auction of items that include an original painting by local artist Kathryn Bury."

Plans shaping up for 100-mile Snowarama

"Plans for the Bradford Snowarama are quickly shaping up as organizers distribute pledge forms, and snowmobilers line up sponsors for the 100-mile ride slated for Sunday, February 5. The Ontario Society for Crippled Children is coordinating the event for the fourth year with the help of local snowmobile clubs, and service clubs involved with the Easter Seals campaign. The society has set a goal of $1 million for the Bradford Snowarama and 17 other similar rides to be held throughout the province. "Things are looking good right now for the Bradford Snowarama," said Don Hart, supervisor of service club relations for Crippled Children. "We're optimistic that everything will go well, if the weather is good." The Bradford and District Snowmobile Club will blaze the trail which begins at Varley's Marina and follows a route north from Bradford along the Schomberg River to Lake Simcoe, following the eastern shore of Cook's Bay as far as Snake Island, crossing over to Innisfil Beach. It continues north to Big Bay Point and heads for the northern terminus at Kempenfeldt Bay. The return route parallels the west coast of Lake Simcoe, and winds through Big Bay Point, Innisfil Beach, Gilford, and back to Bradford and Varley's Marina. More than $50,000 was raised last year by the Bradford Snowarama, and organizers hope to top that amount by a wide margin this year. Whipper Billy Watson, a regular at the snowaramas and a Bradford resident, has helped recruit an impressive line-up of snowmobilers for his hometown ride."
