The Bradford Witness decided to release a series of articles from local townspeople on the history of certain events in Bradford and West Gwillimbury's time. This week, the history of Holland Landing is the topic.

Article about the confusion of naming the Holland River Schomberg River - and which branch of the river is named properly.

"Since last July, a 10-man construction crew from the Canadian National Railways has been installing a new railway trestle across the Holland River, on the boundry [sic] of Simcoe county and the Region of York. The new steel trestle will extend 275 feet across the river and sit 16 to 17 inches higher than the wooden bridge which the railroad is presently using." ... article explains the history of this bridge, and the difficulties of the new installation.

"The Schomberg River dredge was finally launched last Tuesday after an abortive effort the day before. The ponderous machine, built by Louis Devald, slid slowly into the water near Wanda Street, and to the relief of everybody it not only floated, but operated like a charm. Celebrating the event with a bit of the bubbly at right are Art Janse (left) Louis Devald, and John Rupke. The dredge has its work cut out, clearing tons of silt from the Schomberg River."

This notebook contains the levels taken and noted by Dave Sutherland for the Holland Marsh Reclamation Scheme. The second page states, "Holland Marsh reclamation scheme commencing at west side of Holland River going S.W. across marsh Feb 15/24."

An editorial disputing the claim that the river flowing through Bradford is actually called the Schomberg River. The common name for the river in Bradford is the Holland River. Article appeared on page one and six of the newspaper.

"The ties between "The Marsh" and the Netherlands seem to have been destined by fate's fickle finger. They stretch back to the earliest days of British settlement when in 1791 General Frederick Haldimand, Canada's Governor-in-Chief, assigned his Surveyor-General to do a survey of the Lake Simcoe area. Although a British army officer, the man was Dutch-born and by coincidence was named Samuel Johannes Holland." ...
