Description : Life-long area resident and former Bradford District High School teacher Constance Nolan died last Thursday when a fire swept through the bedroom of her condominium apartment at 200 Holland Court. An autopsy was performed and it was determined Miss Nolan died of smoke inhalation.Bradford volunteer firefighters responded to the call at 4:30 p.m. after children in the building saw smoke coming from the apartment. The fire was confined to the bedroom but thick smoke filled the rest of the third-floor apartment.Miss Nolan's body was found seated in a lounge chair in an adjoining sitting room where she was apparently sleeping before succumbing to the smoke. After an investigation by Al Noseworthy of the Ontario Fire Marshall's office, the cause of the fire was determined to be a heating pad left untended on the bed. Mr. Noseworthy said the pad was plugged in and in the full on" position. He said the remains of the pad will be sent to the Canadian Safety Association laboratory to determine if it was defective. There was a smoke detector in the hall beside the bedroom but Mr. Noseworthy said it could not be determined whether it was functioning properly. It had been totally destroyed in the fire and there were no reports of a smoke detector sounding.Mr. Noseworthy said it appeared that the fire had smouldered for a long period of time before flames actually erupted. The bedroom was completely gutted in the blaze.Coroner Dr. G. Blackwell said he does not expect to call an inquest into the fatal fire.Miss Nolan74 was born in Newton Robinson and moved with her family to Bradford in 1915.Her father the late Denis Nolan was former reeve of Bradford. She is also predeceased by her mother Catherine (O'Donnell) and a brother James.Miss Nolan attended St. Michael's College and Lorretto Abbey graduating with a bachelor's degree in French Greek and Latin. The students' yearbook of 1968 was dedicated to her.Miss Nolan was a devout Roman Catholic and contributed generously to Holy Martyrs of Japan Roman Catholic Church in Bradford.Until two years ago she lived alone in the family home on Barrie St. before selling and moving to 200 Holland Court.Friends called at the Lathangue and Skwarchuk Funeral Home Friday December 4 with a funeral mass conducted by Father Vella at Holy Martyrs Saturday at 11 a.m.Interment followed at Holy Martyrs Cemetery in West Gwillimbury. She leaves a sister Aileen Grise nephews Denis Nolan James Nolan Paul Nolan Eugene Nolan John Grise and nieces Mary Carr and Ann Hill.Pallbearers were Dr. Paul Nolan James Nolan Denis Nolan Eugene Nolan John Grise and Dr. Norman Hill."
