Evans confirms St. Mary's sale

Municipality :
Community : Bradford
Lot :
Concession :
Description : Simcoe-Centre MPP D. Arthur Evans confirmed an earlier announcement that the Minister of Education, Thomas Wells, has agreed to allow the Simcoe County Roman Catholic Separate School Board to sell old St. Mary's Separate School to Bradford council for $1. Mr. Evans said that a letter received by the separate board on September 17, was simply a preliminary letter to inform the board that a directive allowing the sale on its way. When the board received the letter they did not interpret it as a preliminary approval of the sale. Instead, they suggested that it was only to inform them that a change would be made in the Education Act that might allow the sale. Evans explained that he had asked ministry officials if he could make the announcement that the sale had been approved and was told he could. Bradford council originally initiated the offer to buy the school for $1. Council hopes to have the school renovated for a day care and senior citizens' centre. The new ministry directive is not only expected to approve the sale of St. Mary's but to allow school boards across the province to sell school property to municipalities without losing any grants they would receive based on the value of the property.

Life cup winner

"A delighted Stephen Bainborough holds the silverware he collected at Bradford District High School commencement last week. Stephen was the people's choice for the Student Life Cup given to the Grade 12 student who has made the most worthy contribution to school life. Principal Don Nielsen sits beside him."

Finally! Schomberg river dredge is launched

"The Schomberg River dredge was finally launched last Tuesday after an abortive effort the day before. The ponderous machine, built by Louis Devald, slid slowly into the water near Wanda Street, and to the relief of everybody it not only floated, but operated like a charm. Celebrating the event with a bit of the bubbly at right are Art Janse (left) Louis Devald, and John Rupke. The dredge has its work cut out, clearing tons of silt from the Schomberg River."

Thompson Smith's mill

"This week's photo was submitted by Mrs. Dorothy Marks who provided most of the photographic material for the Bradford centennial book now available at the town hall. The building above was the office for Thompson Smith's mill in Amsterdam, a little community of lumber mills just south of Bradford. In the early 19th century, lumber mills flourished south of the river, employing about 150 men. In this photo from the left are Robert Collings, George Taylor, Miss Scott, Mrs. W. McKinstry (Ida Collings), James Spence (seated), Jack Davey, James Scott, Sam Scott, Unidentified, Jack Busby, and Tommy Mulligan."

Fred Collings Presented with Map

Fred "Collie" Collings probably knows more about the history of Bradford then anyone, and that's one reason why he was asked to help compile the historical map reproduced below. Mr. Collings, the town's first tax assessor, was presented with a framed copy of the map at a recent council meeting by Mayor Roy Gordon. The map was drawn by Boz Posilovic of the town planners Proctor and Redfern. Queen's Silver Jubille medal recipient Charles Evans remembered the contributions of Mr. Collings, and further mentioned the outstanding efforts of former clerk-treasurer Margaret Davey, and Mr. Evans. Mr. Collings is retired and lives in Bradford.

Municipality :
Community : Beeton
Lot :
Concession :
Description : The familiar old Beeton landmark, the Queen's Hotel, finally succumbed to the wrecker's hammer last Saturday. Builder Bert Fava and his crew had the venerable old structure down in less than a day as a crowd of interested Beeton residents looked on. The hotel was built in the early 1800s and served several functions over the years. A plan to turn the old building into an apartment complex never got past first base. No definite plan has been approved for the site yet, but Fava may build a new town hall with municipal offices, fire hall, and library. The beginning of the end for the Queen's Hotel came in 1974 when the Simcoe County Board of Health condemned it.
