Description : Lester Woolven, born on January 23rd, 1923 in Newmarket, enlisted into the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals on September 27th, 1941, at the age of 18. He landed in England 2 days later. The Signal Corps was essential to the working of the Canadian Army in both the United Kingdom and Continental Europe. Woolven embarked for France, landing on the beachhead of Normandy on July 27th, 1944, where he joined the steady fighting on the French mainland. Woolven saw action at Caen, Falaise, Abbey Ville, Scheldt and the Bulge. After over a year of active service in Northwest Europe, Woolven was honorably discharged on November 13, 1945. He moved to Bradford in 1955, where he worked for Compton's IGA until 1990, and then retired. Entitled to the 1939-45 Star, France and Germany Star, Defense Medal, Canadian Service Medal with clasp, and War Medal 1939-45.
