Description : Barnard Squires, 7, of Riverdrive Park, drowned Sunday in the Holland River after toppling 10 feet from the Holland River bridge, at River Drive Park. His body was recovered two hours after he tripped while playing on the bridge and plunged into the water. Newmarket firemen worked over him for almost an hour.Eyewitnesses said the boy disappeared after striking the water. A nearby cottager, Oliver Pellet, 26, made an attempt to save the boy after he was attracted by the cries of two boys in a boat, Stanley Meads, 12, of Toronto, and Murray McKelvey, 16, of Newmarket.Jellet (sic) plunged into the river fully clothed, seconds after the boy was seen to fall.Fishermen and nearby residents took turns diving into the river in search of the boy's body. It was recovered in 12 feet of water less than 15 yards from the bridge.Barnard leaves five brothers and one sister, besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Squires. He was a pupil of St. Mary's School, Bradford.
